If you’re considering going to a Halloween party dressed as Elvis, you owe it to yourself to know a little about the cars he’s owned. And if you think the King only owned Cadillacs, you’d be wrong. Why write about Elvis’ automobiles? Because if you’re a car fanatic like we are, there’s a good chance you’ll find it interesting to study what automobiles another fellow fanatic (one who was a star with the world at his fingertips and virtually unlimited funds) would pick out for himself. Especially if the time period of purchases takes place during the golden era of the automobile.
From the age of twenty in 1955 when the King’s first hit single made him wealthy overnight through his untimely death in 1977, Elvis purchased an untold number of cars for himself, friends, family, and strangers each year.
A rare picture of Elvis and band members with the original pink Cadillac he owned. This 1954 Fleetwood was the first Cadillac he purchased, and it was lost due to vehicle fire soon after. He later purchased a 1955 model that was custom painted to match this one. The ’55 is the one he held onto, and the one everyone remembers him by.
He preferred buying new cars over older collectibles and usually updated his fleet regularly with the most current models. Often he gave away his year-old chariots as gifts, other times he’d trade them in on the spur of the moment after passing a dealership displaying something that caught his fancy. Many a Memphis area dealership owner received a phone call in the middle of the night by Elvis, or one of his associates, that the King was interested in an immediate purchase. They quickly arrived to complete the sale, for they knew Elvis was a spontaneous buyer – one that was unlikely to return the next day. If the King appreciated the design, the lines, of an automobile, he didn’t care if it was a $500 Volkswagen or a $50,000 Cadillac – he’d buy it. My kind of guy. In writing this article, our interest was in the cars he chose for himself rather than ones he may have bought for others. It would be seemingly impossible to track down every single vehicle Elvis owned throughout the years, but we’ve made every effort to find pictures of ones that could be documented.

Elvis Presley's 1976 Cadillac Seville
The 1976-79 Cadillac Seville was a groundbreaking model for Cadillac. Compactly sized, it was styled in the nature of European luxury sedans and sold very well. Elvis was first in line to purchase this 1976 Cadillac Seville in the spring of 1975. He drove it for a year before giving it as a gift to his dentist, Dr. Hoffman.

Once Elvis began to make some money as a recording artist, he purchased his first Cadillac in March of 1955 – a pink 1954 Fleetwood sedan. Due to a fire that happened on the road, the ’54 only provided transportation for Elvis and the Blue Moon Boys for about three months.

Elvis’s pink ’54 Fleetwood caught fire and burned beyond repair when a seized brake lining overheated and caught fire near Texarkana, Arkansas in June 1955. Because Elvis was extremely dismayed, he immediately found a replacement ’55 Fleetwood that became an icon of his persona.
-
-
In July 1955, Elvis purchased a new ’55 Cadillac Fleetwood to replace the pink ’54 model that had burned. Elvis gave it to his mother Gladys as a gift, but he often used it since she had no license and never drove. Because Elvis held onto it until his death, the car remains on display in the Elvis Presley Automotive Museum today.

From 1957 – 1960, the Eldorado “Brougham” was a separate, low-volume specialty 4-door. It shared no body panels with any other Cadillacs, and was priced almost twice as high as “regular” Eldorados such as the Eldo Seville coupe, and Eldo Biarritz. Elvis and other celebrities owned them.

From April 1958 to early 1960, Elvis served in the U.S. military and was stationed in Germany. He immediately picked up a used Volkswagen Beetle of mid- to late-1950s vintage to use until he would come by a ’58 BMW 507. This picture shows Elvis in a similar model in the movie Double Trouble.

Elvis’s 1958 BMW 507 was a “pre-owned” one, formerly used in several track events by racecar driver Hans Stuck. Because the engine had been suitably thrashed, the dealership (BMW of Glöckler) the engine was rebuilt to stock specification for Elvis to use on a daily basis.

During his time driving the white 1958 BMW 507, female fans would often write their phone numbers on the car in red lipstick – something that was almost impossible to remove. Elvis purchases a 1962 Ford Thunderbird “Sports Roadster” for $6,284 from a Memphis area Ford dealership salesman Ernie Barrasso he had known since grade school. It was a high-end Thunderbird edition featuring special wire wheels, a tonneau cover to hide the rear seats, and grille slots on the rear fenders.
-
-
Knowing Elvis’s penchant for cars and hearing comments that “this is a car Elvis might buy”, salesman Ernie Barrasso visited Graceland on a Sunday and dropped off a brochure (shown here). The next day, Elvis drove to the Ford dealership in one of his Cadillacs and bought the T-Bird on the spot, waiting for it to be prepped so he could drive it home. He later sent someone down to pick up his Cadillac.
-
-
A 1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster similar to the one Elvis had. As it happened, the spokes on the wire wheels this car was equipped with suffered from a faulty design and were prone to breaking and flying apart. This happened to Elvis’s car when it was being driven out to California for him to use while filming a movie. His drivers had to stop along the way to replace the wire wheels. Since they were all recalled, the dealer could only supply black steel wheels. When Elvis saw the car arrive without the wire wheels, he was so upset with Ford Motor Company he placed a call to them, with the buck finally stopping at Edsel Ford himself. Knowing what a good customer Elvis was, Mr. Ford apologized for the situation that the wheels could not be replaced – even offering Elvis his money back if he wished to return the car. Elvis declined to return it but never really enjoyed the car after that point.

Elvis reportedly owned a 1962 Cadillac convertible (similar to this one pictured) that he gave as a gift to Jack Marshall of Jack Marshall Foods – an old friend of Elvis who played piano at Gladys Presley’s funeral in 1958.

In the late ‘60s, Elvis and Hollywood customizer George Barris drew up plans to create a “Dream Cadillac” based on a ’65 Eldorado convertible Elvis owned at the time. For reasons unknown, Elvis never chose to follow through with it while he was alive.
-
-
Nine years after the King’s death, representatives from the Elvis Presley Cosmetics Company contacted Barris in 1986 to make the original plans a reality. Barris found a ’65 Eldorado and gave it full star treatment in its execution as a tribute to what Elvis would have wanted.

Forty coats of gold paint were applied, and the steering wheel, television, and phone received gold plating. Three gold 45 records of Elvis’ were bonded to the inside of the soft top cover. After completion, the Dream Caddy was put on a display tour by E.P. Cosmetics from 1986-87 – and made the prize in their sweepstakes entry.

After the ’65 Eldorado promotional tour was over, Barris bought the car back and used it as a promotional tool for himself. Since then, it has changed hands several times, remaining privately owned to this day.

Elvis bought this 1966 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud new, then traded it in. After that, actor Michael Landon and country music artist Charlie Rich owned it before it ended up at the Graceland museum.

In January 1967, Elvis and fiancée Priscilla took a sightseeing trip to his birth town of Tupelo, Mississippi. Exploring back roads, they came across a small ranch property for sale they fell in love with and purchased. On Valentine’s day of that year, Elvis took delivery of this ’67 Ford Ranchero to use on ranch visits.
-
-
After about a year of owning the ranch in Mississippi and this 1967 Ford Ranchero he had purchased on a whim, Elvis lost interest in “ranching” and sold the property. The car was traded in on a ’68 Cadillac. Currently, the El Ranchero is on display at The Museum of Automobiles in Morrilton, Arkansas.

Elvis was first in line to purchase a new-for-‘67 Cadillac Eldorado (with front-wheel-drive) similar to this one shown. The ’67 Eldo featured new engineering and design unlike any other previous Cadillac, and its looks made it the must-have car among many celebrities that year. While Elvis loved the car, after seeing the improvements and updates to the next year’s ’68 model, he sold it to actress Pat Priest.

In this paparazzi photo from 1967 taken of a rental house Elvis used for studio casting on Rocca Place in Los Angeles, Elvis is walking toward his 1967 Cadillac Eldorado. Also visible in this picture is his 1967 Lincoln Continental limousine because Priscilla rode in it to meet him there.

According to reports, Elvis was showing the 1967 Lincoln Continental limousine that he received as a gift from Colonel Parker. A passerby in the pink Dodge slowed up to look at Elvis, then the king went over and introduced himself. Or perhaps he liked the color of the Dodge.
-
-
It’s unclear if the ’67 Lincoln Continental limo shown in this picture is the same car in the previous picture after being repainted black, or if it’s a different one altogether.

After one occasion in early 1969 when Elvis’s 1968 Eldorado wouldn’t start, Elvis retrieved a pistol from the house and shot a hole through the right front fender (visible in picture).

Priscilla enjoyed driving the 1968 Cadillac Eldorado the most. Shortly after Elvis shot it with a pistol for not starting, they got a ’69 model and gave this one to Priscilla’s stepfather as a gift.

The cut line on the door panel identifies the car in this picture as a 1969 or 1970 Cadillac Fleetwood. Given Elvis’s penchant for updating his fleet, he would have no doubt purchased one due to styling revisions over the ’68 models. The date of the picture is unknown.

Elvis bought this 1971 Mercedes 280SL roadster for Priscilla around Christmas 1970. Reportedly she claims it has always been her favorite car. It’s not hard to imagine he saw a tiny bit of the ’58 BMW 507 convertible he had leased when stationed in Germany.
-
-
Visible in this picture of Elvis’s Los Angeles home are Priscilla’s white 1971 Mercedes 280SL and his 1971 Stutz Blackhawk, which was one of his personal favorites.
-
-
Elvis became a big fan of the Stutz Motor Car Company, resurrected from 1930s fame by a New York banker in 1968. Built around a ’69 Pontiac Grand Prix chassis and frame, they were powered by a choice of General Motors V8 engines. By 1970, two Stutz Blackhawk prototypes had been completed – the second one of which was given to the first U.S. dealership in Beverly Hills to use as a sales demonstrator. This prototype built in 1970 was registered as a ’71, the first model year production cars were made through 1987. The two pictures below show the first black ’71 prototype being delivered to Los Angeles from the coachworks builder in Europe
-
-
Among many celebrities given personal showings of the new-for-’71 Stutz car, Elvis and Frank Sinatra were both eager to buy this second prototype. Elvis convinced the dealership owner to sell him the actual car (instead of taking an order) by pointing out the publicity from the King himself driving around in it would do more to sell cars than any methods the dealership was using. He also was agreeable to pose for publicity photos, and to allowing the prototype to appear in a national auto show three days later – two things Sinatra would not agree to. That sealed the deal, and days after the auto show the car was Elvis’s.
-
-
Elvis loved his first 1971 Stutz and drove it often until it was badly damaged in an accident July 1971 while an employee was taking it to the carwash. Elvis kept the damaged car in storage but never got it fixed. After his death, the Graceland Estate had it restored in 1981 for display, where it remains today.
-
-
Fans always liked to take pictures of what was in Elvis’s driveway, and this 1971 photo is no exception. Visible are the 1971 Stutz, 1969 Mercedes 600 limo, 1969 Cadillac Eldorado (way back), 1966 Cadillac convertible (facing camera), and a 1969 Ford LTD Country Squire wagon.

A custom coachbuilder created this 1972 Cadillac wagon for Elvis. Built from a Sedan de Ville using sections from General Motors’ full-size station wagon lineup, it features a forward-facing third row seat and a “clamshell” two-piece tailgate with glass that retracts into the roof, and a door that retracts into the lower body. Another one was also built for Dean Martin.

This 1975 Ferrari Dino was purchased by Elvis used in October 1976 for $21,000. It was the only Ferrari he owned. Somehow it’s easier to picture the King in one of Ferrari’s bigger, front-engine models rather than this one which had the engine behind the passenger area.

The 1976-79 Cadillac Seville was a groundbreaking model for Cadillac. Compactly sized, it was styled in the nature of European luxury sedans and sold very well. Elvis was first in line to purchase this 1976 Cadillac Seville in the spring of 1975.

Elvis drove his 1976 Cadillac Seville for a year before giving it as a gift to his dentist, Dr. Hoffman.

1976 was a year when Cadillac designs seem to hit their stride. Elvis may have thought so too, because he gave away more ’76 Caddies as gifts than any other model year. This is a 1976 Fleetwood Talisman special edition model he had the “pimp treatment” applied to.
-
-
Elvis’s pimped ride is on display at a museum in the Netherlands. The treatment on his ’76 Cadillac Fleetwood was perhaps inspired by a similar treatment of a ’71 Fleetwood in the 007 movie “Live and Let Die”

This is an amazing article. I’ve been an elvis fanatic for 20 years and I’ve never seen such a complete list of his cars. And the attention to detail is exquisite. Many of the pictures are rare, some of them I’ve never seen before. Great article
