The 2016 New York International Auto Show opens to the public at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Friday March 25th at 10am. As we were attending the press preview of the show on the 23rd and 24th, we decided that we didn’t feel the need to capture images of all new car makes and model present at the show the way we have in the past. Also, we opted not to cover every new-vehicle introduction presented by a top auto executive. Motor Trend, Autoweek, and Car & Driver are better equipped to deliver this news than we are.
Instead, we decided to focus on classic cars that were on hand at the show (because there are a number of them), and on new vehicles that we feel embody classic appeal. In other words, cars that auto enthusiasts like us would enjoy seeing. Ugly for the sake of being new and different just doesn’t cut it anymore.
For starters, the Vintage Automobile Museum of New Jersey will be on the front lower level all week with ten member-supplied cars such as 1956 & 57 Chevrolet Bel Air convertibles, a 1961 Chrysler 300 coupe, a 1937 Packard Super Eight, a 1940 Ford coupe, a 1931 Ford Model A, a 1923 Detroit Electric, 1909 Cadillac Model 30, and 1911 Hupmobile Model 20. See our Picture Collection at the bottom of this article.
At the rear of the basement, you’ll also find a group of restored New York City Police Cars dating back to the 1950s, and -90s New York City police cars on display. This is the third year the group has been there, and the collection is still worth a look because there are several new and different vehicles this year.
To go with their updated GT-R high-performance coupe, Nissan is displaying a collection of vintage Skyline GT-Rs – one made during each of the six prior generations that were introduced in 1969, 1973, 1989, 1995, 1999, and 2007. Throughout the show floor, you’ll also come across a 1979 BMW mid-engine M1, a 1971 Volvo P1800 coupe, a 1970s Datsun 240Z, and a 2002 Acura NSX.
Show hours are 10am-10pm (Sundays 10am-7pm) through Sunday April 3, 2016.

On display by the Alfa Romeo section is this 33 Stradiale – one of 18 made from 1967-69. Its V8 engine, based on racing designs, will take this car to 60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds. The car sold for $17,000 in 1968 ($118,000 in today’s dollars). Today, they’re worth well over $10 million. The yellow model in the background is a 4C Spyder.

Porsche introduced their new-for-2017 BOXSTER model. Designated “718”, it pays tribute to Porsche’s 4-cylinder mid-engined racing machines from the 1950s and 1960s that used the same number designation.

-
Unlike the outgoing Boxster, this one will feature a turbo 4-cylinder engine instead of a 6.

2017 PORSCHE 911R
The 911R is a response to customer feedback about the most recent motorsports-infused 911 GT3 RS.
Using the GT3 RS as a starting point, the 911R is powered by the same 500hp (377kW) naturally-aspirated flat-six engine. But the 911R is 110lbs (50kg) lighter than the GT3 RS, thanks to its magnesium roof, carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber fender, and lightweight wiring loom. Instead of a 7-speed clutchless manual transmission, there’s a clutch pedal, a gear lever, and six real manual gears.

-
2017 PORSCHE 911 TURBO –

About Sean
Welcome to Classic Cars Today Online! We seek to explore the subject of classic vehicles from the 1950s through today. It is our belief that a car needn't be old to be respected and admired for graceful design, historical significance, and future value. As founder and Editor-In-Chief, I welcome contributions from you about your own car-related interests and ownership experiences. As far as myself, I've worked in the automotive service field and have been a contributor to Autoweek Magazine, The Star, Mercedes Enthusiast Magazine, Examiner.com and more. Currently, I'm a copywriter and own several foreign and domestic classic cars. In my spare time, you'll find me serving as Technical Editor and officer of several car clubs, being a concours car show judge, and meeting some great folks around the tri-state NY / NJ / Pennsylvania area at car shows. - Sean Connor
